Project Name:Smallholder Dairy Improvement Project (SDIP)
Project Goal: The overall objective of SDIP was to sustainably improve the productivity of dairy cows from an average 5-7liters per cow per day to 15 litres per cow per day in Matapwata Extension Planning Areas (EPAs) while adapting to effects of climate change and ensuring food security by 2017.

Project Name: Supply and Distribution of Sweet potato and Cassava Planting Materials
Project Goal: This programme benefited 52,222 households under the Multi-Donor Trust Fund (MDTF) Emergency Response. The programme was a government project under Agriculture Sector Wide Approach (ASWAp) being implemented with financial assistance from the Multi Donor Trust Fund, World Bank being the Fund administrator. The main objective of ASWAP-Support Project was to improve food security and resilience of communities at household and national levels. SDI distributed planting materials to farmers in the whole Blantyre and Phalombe districts.

Project Name:Views from Frontline (VFL)-Research
Project Goal: SDI conducted research aimed at tracking/measuring progress with the implementation of the Hyogo Framework in Malawi on behalf of the Global Network for Disaster Reduction (GNDR). During these years SDI also developed Country Reports for Malawi and was a National Coordinating Organization (NCO). VFL was a participatory monitoring programme designed to strengthen public accountability for DRR policy execution by providing the first independent global review of progress towards the implementation of disaster risk reduction at the local level.

Project Name: Action from Frontline (AFL) - Action Research
Project Goal: SDI in collaboration with Global Network for Disaster Reduction (GNDR) and Mzuzu University - Urban ARK (Urban Risk Knowledge) facilitated risk profiling in Blantyre city and Karonga town. In the exercise CSOs and communities embark on an in-depth process to explore risks that are faced by people within a locality. This is done by facilitating communities to understand risks and root causes, and strengthening their ability to address these through regular reflection and by working in partnership with others. The ultimate goal of the process is to strengthen affected people’s ability to address everyday disasters and risks including their underlying causes, and become more resilient to these shocks and stresses

Project Name: FAO/DEPECHO - Resilience Research
Project Goal:SDI was subcontracted by Africa Centre for Disaster Studies (ACDS) to conduct a Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) commissioned assessment aimed at measuring the contribution of disaster risk reduction interventions in agriculture and food security to resilience in Southern Africa. The research looked at the role of farmers’ associative mechanisms, small-scale irrigation systems, crop varieties, cropping techniques and the timing of production in increasing the resilience of the rural small-scale farmer in Southern Africa. The geographic scope of the assignment covered Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique. In Malawi, the study assessed interventions implemented by FAO partners particularly Evangelical Association of Malawi (EAM) in Nsanje and GOAL Malawi in Chikhwawa districts. SDI was responsible for the research in Malawi

Project Goal:In collaboration with the Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DODMA), Africa Centre for Disaster Studies and Global Environmental Facility (GEF) Small Grants Scheme Programme, SDI organized climate change and DRR short courses, Participants included directors, project managers and project officers who implement programmes in DRR, Climate Change, Biodiversity, Land Degradation, Chemicals and Capacity Building.

Project Name: SADC-World Bank DRR Capacity Building Programme
Project Goal:Together with the Africa Centre for Disaster Studies (ACDS) based at North-West University in South Africa and the University of Botswana, SDI has been engaged by the World Bank Group and Southern Africa Development Community (SADC) to conduct an assignment whose objective is to facilitate action research in support of SADC’s Regional Disaster Risk Reduction Policy and provide capacity enhancement interventions in various DRR areas to SADC member states’ academia, research institutions, legislature, civil society organizations and private sector in order to enhance their contribution in the implementation of climate change resilience and DRR activities in the region.

Project Goal: Youth Economic and Social Action (YESA)
Project Goal: The goal of the project was to increase the socio-economic status of marginalized youth in Chikhwawa District. The interventions for the project incuded include; a)Youth Village Savings & Loan Associations b)Youth Entrepreneurship & Business Training and Development and c) Advocacy. The project contributed to the increase of income for the youth from an average monthly income of MK7, 000.00 ($10) in the year 2015 to average monthly income of MK13, 000.00 ($18 ($38,533) as of Dec. 2017. The group savings amongst youth increased from zero in 2015 to an accumulative total of MK28,128,817 as of Dec. 2017. At least 59% (thus 354 youth out of 600 targeted) have been employed as the results of YESA advocacy activities. The project increased capacity of the marginalized youth to understand and claim their social and economic rights. A total of 102 youth reported to have claimed their rights and marginalized youth accessed socio-economic services (access to employment opportunities, disaster support services and HIV/AIDS services).

Project Goal: Small Producers Development Project(SPDP)
Project Goal:The project aimed at reducing poverty and inequalities among economically and socially marginalized artisans and farmers. It supported existing beekeepers/honey producers, Handicrafts/weaves producers and Small Scale Irrigation farmers . The project focused on improving product quality,promotion, packaging and facilitated certification by Malawi Bureau of Standards (MBS) . Small producers were also strengthened to increase their voices , bargaining power and claim their rights.

Project Goal:Combined Therapy & Physical Tracking (CTPT)
Project Goal:Supported by VIIV Health Care, SDI implemented a PMTCT project called CTPT in Chikowa, Bangwe and Zingwangwa Health Centre from 2012 - 2016. The project aimed at increasing stable access to PMTCT services by pregnant women, new mothers and new babies. Its components included EID, HTC, ART, Tracking and follow up of patients, women empowerment and Male involvement.

Project Name: Peer to Zero
Project Goal: SDI in partnership with Chikowa health centre implemented a Peers to Zero (P2Z) Programme in 2017. The programme was set up by PATA and African Young Positive Network (AY+) to bring together frontline healthcare providers and young people living with HIV (YPLHIV), creating a unique platform for advocacy and service delivery change.

Project Name:Nditha Project - Collaboration
Project Goal: SDI in partnership with Foundation for Community and Capacity Development (FOCCAD) and Life Concern (LICO), with support from Positive Action for Children Fund (PACF) implemented a two year project titled “Nditha kuchitapo kanthu” in two Traditional Authorities of Maganga and Kuluunda in Salima district. The project aimed at increasing retention of women and men living with HIV and infants on PMTCT and EID in the lake shore fishing district of Salima in Malawi. Nditha consortium focuseed on three key components to promote women’s SRHR including: making health facilities male friendly, engaging men and boys as active partners and working with influential and religious leaders to deal with gender and cultural disparities that promote Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Project Name:HIV Audio Books for the Blind

Project Goal: HIV Audio-Books for the Blind (HAB4B) Project aimed at increasing access to HIV prevention and SRH information among the visually impaired students using ICT. The project was supported by PEPFAR – US Embassy and was part of the Multimedia AIDS Communication Programme (MACP). It targeted two schools Makande (Chikhwawa) and Nadzombe (Phalombe) for the Visual Impaired. The project was implemented in partnership with Digital Multimedia Solutions.

Project Name: Multimedia AIDS Communication Project (MACP)
Focal Area:HIV &AIDS
Project Goal: SDI implemented MACP project in the year 2012 - 2013 in Blantyre, Zomba and Chikhwawa. The project was funded by PEPFAR – US Embassy and aimed at enhancing the accessibility of HIV/AIDS prevention information to the youth and adolescents through ICT. This was in recognition that in the current modern era, a good percentage of young people have access to ICTs by using different technologies such as listening to radios, watching TV, using cell phones, computers and other communication devices.Through the project, Over 1000 students from 30 schools is Blantyre , Chikhwawa and Zomba were linked and supported to use ICT to share HIV prevention infor-mation through media applications such as internet, Facebook and Whatsapp .

Project Name:Pamodzi Project - Collaboration
Project Goal: SDI in conjunction with LICO and FOCCAD are implementing a two-year project in Salima called PAMODZI. The project aims at preventing children born from HIV/AIDS mothers from contracting the virus.
PAMODZI project, which started in February 2019 and expected to end in December 2020, targets reactive teen mothers and sex workers whose children are deemed exposed. Currently, 17 mentor mothers (volunteers to work with teen mothers?) and 13 aunties who work with fellow sex workers in hotspots within Salima have been trained. The project has three objectives, and each objective is championed by a consortium member. The three objectives includes: a) creating safe space at the health facilities for HIV+ teen mothers and sex workers to access the service (FOCCAD); b) increasing awareness to communities for the safe space at the health facilities (LICO); and c) facilitate tracing, testing and treating and enhance collaboration among the community, the health facilities and the project (SDI). So far the project through its volunteers which are strategically identified across the communities has reached out to over 286 teen mothers and 193 sex workers who are of the bearing ages as well as HIV/AIDS positive.

Project Name:National Reading Programme (NRP)

Project Name:Southern Youth Conference on Climate Change (SAYCCC)
Project Goal:In 2010, SRGDI organized and co-hosted the first ever Southern Africa Youth Conference on Climate Change (SAYCCC), which brought together young activists and climate change practitioners in SADC. The conference was supported by COMESA, Global Climate Change Alliance (European Commission) and Government of Malawi to build capacity of youth in climate change adaptation, mitigation and advocacy.

Project Name: Climate Change Corners Initiative (CCCI)
Project Goal:With funding from the US Embassy, SDI piloted the Climate Change Corners Initiative. The project was aimed at introducing Climate Change Centers at Polytechnic, Mzuzu University and Chancellor College Libraries. Climate change centres were supposed to be a section within US Embassy Corners that could provide in depth information on climate change to university students and link them to international and regional climate change knowledge, initiatives and opportunities. The project developed a Climate Change Education interactive educational CDs.

Project Name: Documentation of Climate Change Impacts in Balaka
Project Goal: In 2010 with funding from Malawi Environment Endowment Trust (MEET), SDI documented climate changes issues in Malawi particularly drought and flood produce districts of Chikhwawa and Balaka districts in Malawi. In the documentary SDI showcased how climate change is affecting communities and how they are coping up. The documentary was produce to advocate for adaptation activities.

Project Name: Soche Landcare Extension Project
Project Goal:The project was multi-pronged community initiative aimed at restoring the ecosystem of the Soche Mountain Forest Reserve after many years of destruction and neglect. The project benefitted the natural environment through rehabilitation of degraded lands, afforestation in community areas and mountain slopes, and enforcement of local by-laws to promote natural regeneration of vegetation cover and protect habitats of the few remaining wild animals, including hyenas and birds. The project is also benefitted communities adjacent to the mountain reserve through training and sustainable alternative livelihood activities to enable them to generate additional incomes as a means of reducing direct reliance on the mountain for all daily needs.

Project Name:Misuku Hills Art Challenge (MIHAC)
Project Goal: The Misuku Hills Art Challenge (MiHAC) was anational competition that brought together 12 top
artists, photographers and film makers in Malawi to showcase the beauty and ecological, cultural, aesthetical and economic value of Misuku Hills Forest Reserves. A smaller art competition was also conducted for school children in schools surrounding Misuku Hills. The overall goal of the project was to ensure that Misuku Hills Forest Reserve is well conserved and also promote tourism and culture for people in Misuku Hills. The project engaged the general public in Malawi through the media.

Project Name: Solar Social Enterprise
Project Goal: In 2016, SDI won the SEED Award for Africa. The SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development is an annual awards scheme designed to find the most promising, innovative and locally-led start-up eco-inclusive enterprises in countries with developing and emerging economies. SEED was founded at the 2002 World Summit on Sustainable Development in Johannesburg by UNEP, UNDP and IUCN. SDI was given seed money aimed at ; a) Establishment of New Partnerships b) Expanding and strengthening the distribution network c) Enhancing Marketing , Awareness & Sales and d) Organizational and enterprise development .

Project Name: Parliamentary and Presidential Elections Support Project (2009)
Project Goal:In May 2009, SDI through its programme Demokalase Yathu conducted civic and voter education with the Malawi Electoral Commission (MEC) in Chikhwawa district prior to the Malawi presidential and parliamentary elections. Through the PPE Support Project, SDI was given two constituencies namely; Chikwawa South and Mkombezi Constituencies. SDI conducted awareness and education throuth threatre for development, whistle stops, public rallies, posters and also demonstrations on the voting process.

Project Name: Bangwe Gravity Water Project
Project Goal:The project is supplying clean and safe piped gravity water to residents of Bangwe in Blantyre.. The project targets communities that in high areas on the base of these mountains where Water Board faces problems of water pressure. This programme does not substitute Water Board but ensures that in short run communities in these areas access clean water, good hygiene and sanitation. Over 500 households are benefiting and cases of cholera have gone down.

Project Goal: Youth Economic and Social Action (YESA)
Project Goal: The goal of the project was to increase the socio-economic status of marginalized youth in Chikhwawa District. The interventions for the project incuded include; a)Youth Village Savings & Loan Associations b)Youth Entrepreneurship & Business Training and Development and c) Advocacy. The project contributed to the increase of income for the youth from an average monthly income of MK7, 000.00 ($10) in the year 2015 to average monthly income of MK13, 000.00 ($18 ($38,533) as of Dec. 2017. The group savings amongst youth increased from zero in 2015 to an accumulative total of MK28,128,817 as of Dec. 2017. At least 59% (thus 354 youth out of 600 targeted) have been employed as the results of YESA advocacy activities. The project increased capacity of the marginalized youth to understand and claim their social and economic rights. A total of 102 youth reported to have claimed their rights and marginalized youth accessed socio-economic services (access to employment opportunities, disaster support services and HIV/AIDS services).

The project aimed at increasing retention of women and men living with HIV and infants on PMTCT and EID in the lake shore fishing district of Salima in Malawi. Nditha consortium focuseed on three key components to promote women’s SRHR including: making health facilities male friendly, engaging men and boys as active partners and working with influential and religious leaders to deal with gender and cultural disparities that promote Gender Based Violence (GBV).

Project Goal: SDI implemented MACP project in the year 2012 - 2013 in Blantyre, Zomba and Chikhwawa. The project was funded by PEPFAR – US Embassy and aimed at enhancing the accessibility of HIV/AIDS prevention information to the youth and adolescents through ICT. This was in recognition that in the current modern era, a good percentage of young people have access to ICTs by using different technologies such as listening to radios, watching TV, using cell phones, computers and other communication devices.Through the project, Over 1000 students from 30 schools is Blantyre , Chikhwawa and Zomba were linked and supported to use ICT to share HIV prevention infor-mation through media applications such as internet, Facebook and Whatsapp .

Project Name:Pamodzi Project - Collaboration
Project Goal: SDI in conjunction with LICO and FOCCAD are implementing a two-year project in Salima called PAMODZI. The project aims at preventing children born from HIV/AIDS mothers from contracting the virus.
PAMODZI project, which started in February 2019 and expected to end in December 2020, targets reactive teen mothers and sex workers whose children are deemed exposed. Currently, 17 mentor mothers (volunteers to work with teen mothers?) and 13 aunties who work with fellow sex workers in hotspots within Salima have been trained. The project has three objectives, and each objective is championed by a consortium member. The three objectives includes: a) creating safe space at the health facilities for HIV+ teen mothers and sex workers to access the service (FOCCAD); b) increasing awareness to communities for the safe space at the health facilities (LICO); and c) facilitate tracing, testing and treating and enhance collaboration among the community, the health facilities and the project (SDI). So far the project through its volunteers which are strategically identified across the communities has reached out to over 286 teen mothers and 193 sex workers who are of the bearing ages as well as HIV/AIDS positive.

Project Name: Soche Landcare Extension Project
Project Goal:The project was multi-pronged community initiative aimed at restoring the ecosystem of the Soche Mountain Forest Reserve after many years of destruction and neglect. The project benefitted the natural environment through rehabilitation of degraded lands, afforestation in community areas and mountain slopes, and enforcement of local by-laws to promote natural regeneration of vegetation cover and protect habitats of the few remaining wild animals, including hyenas and birds. The project is also benefitted communities adjacent to the mountain reserve through training and sustainable alternative livelihood activities to enable them to generate additional incomes as a means of reducing direct reliance on the mountain for all daily needs.

Project Name: Bangwe Gravity Water Project
Project Goal:The project is supplying clean and safe piped gravity water to residents of Bangwe in Blantyre.. The project targets communities that in high areas on the base of these mountains where Water Board faces problems of water pressure. This programme does not substitute Water Board but ensures that in short run communities in these areas access clean water, good hygiene and sanitation. Over 500 households are benefiting and cases of cholera have gone down.
