Gender and Women Empowerment

SDI has a gender and social inclusion policy that guides the organisation on issues of gender equality.   The institution has mainstreamed gender in its governance documents, staff, programmes and processes. There is a gender focal point in the organisation.  Gender based violence and a sexual harassment are very serious offences in the institution which attract immediate dismissal of the offender/s. There is a deliberate policy to empower women and girls through recruitment and training our target is to achieve 50/50 representation of women in all positions in the company. SDI has implemented a number of community women empowernment interventions some of which are outlined below;

SDI has been working with disadvantaged women since its establishment. In 2006 the organisation embarked on a programme known as ”Mayi Wachitukuko” which means ” a progressive woman” in order to improve the income and social status of  rural women.  Most of the groups of women are doing income generating activities which were initiated by the programmme.

SDI has engaged women in rearing poultry, growing vegetable are fruits , making honey from beekeeping , making candles from beeswax ,making handicrafts ,coffee production and keeping dairy animals. SDI has also introduced women to Savings and Loan associations.Through groups, women have develop social networks which help them to support each other and advocate for issues that improve their economic and social well being.
