CLIMATE CHANGE  AND ENVIRONMENT PROGRAMME

  - Increase adoption of  Climate Change Adaptation and Mitigation technologies
  - Promote entrepreneurship in climate change related  and environment conservation technologies e.g. Solar and Biofuels

  • SDI  has Over 10 years’ experience working in Climate Change, Environment, Natural Resources Management and Disaster Risk Reduction programmes in Malawi.
 

  • Has provided Technical Support to Enhancing Community Resilience Programme (ECRP) in Malawi under the “Low Carbon Intervention” particularly Solar Technology.
 
  • Has been providing training  to GEF Small Grants Programme  grantees in technical areas of Climate Change, Biodiversity, Land Degradation and Chemicals  through GEF and UNDP Malawi funded programme
 
  • Has been part of the Malawi REDD+  Strategy  Team and Vision and Goal Setting Process
 
  • In 2010 with funding from Malawi Environment Endowment Trust (MEET),  SDI documented climate changes issues in Malawi particularly drought and flood produce districts of Chikhwawa and Balaka districts in Malawi.
 
  • Have been  involved in planning of the Malawi government Africa  Adaptation Programme (AAP) and Climate Change Programme (CCP).
 
  • SDI was also involved in the review of the current National Adaptation Programme of Action (NAPA).
 
  • Has participated in the 41Global Environment Facility (GEF) Council Meeting in Washington DC and also the Southern Africa Expanded Workshop of the GEF in Mozambique , Zambia and  South Africa.
 
  • SDI co-founded the National Youth Network on Climate Change (NYNCC) in Malawi.
 
  • Worked with IM Swedish  Development Partner in Relief and Recovery for Flood Victims of 2015 and 2016 Floods in Malawi
 
  • SDI is working with Total Malawi in promoting Solar for Lighting and Charging in Rural Malawi across the Country
 
  • In the year 2013/2014, SDI organized and facilitated the Disaster Risk  Reduction and Climate Change Short Course for CSOs across Malawi. The training was organized in collaboration with the Government of Malawi Department of Disaster Management Affairs (DoDMA), and Africa Centre for  Disaster Studies with funding from GEF Small Grants Programme and USAID.
 
  • In November 2013, SDI was sub-contracted by North-West University (RSA) to conduct an evaluation for Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), DEPECHO programme activities in Malawi in the year 2013. The objective of the research was to measure the contribution of key technical activities to the increase in resilience and preparedness of small-scale farmers for natural hazard exposure in Southern Africa. The research looked at the role of farmers’ associative mechanisms, small-scale irrigation systems, crop varieties, cropping techniques and the timing of production in increasing the resilience of the rural small-scale farmer in Southern Africa The study’s geographic scope covered Madagascar, Malawi and Mozambique. In Malawi the research was conducted in Nsanje and Chikwawa districts.
 
  • In the year 2013/2014, SDI participated in Actions from the Frontline with funding from Global Network for Disaster Reduction (GNDR). The aim of the programme is to assist communities in Bangwe Township in Blantyre, to identify risks and take actions to reduce day to day disasters in their communities
