Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR)
Disasters continue to cause heavy losses of lives, livelihoods and development gains in Southern Africa. Early this year (2019), the cyclone Idai affected Malawi, Mozambique, and Zimbabwe resulting in heavy losses of lives, livelihoods, property and financial resources.
SDI believes that Disaster Risk Management is key to securing lives, livelihood and economic gains for the poor. With risk informed planning and vulnerability reduction lives and livelihoods can be protected, response costs reduced and resilience of communities can be secured.
This however requires investment in community based Disaster Risk Reduction, research, training and a supportive policy environment. SDI is therefore engaged in disaster risk reduction specifically working on community based DRR, research, training and advocacy. SDI is also committed to providing humanitarian assistance to households affected by disasters in order to save lives and prevent hunger and malnutrition. SDI has been working in Disaster risk reduction in Malawi and SADC Region for the past 13 years.
