The institution is an active member of the Civil Society Network on Climate Change (CISONECC) where it is the secretary of the Climate Change Adaptation working group. It is also a founding member of the Malawi National Youth Network on Climate Change. We focus on climate change adaptation, mitigation, building resilience, disaster reduction and sustainable development. SDI has worked on a number of projects outline below;
Southern Africa Youth Conference on Climate Change (SAYCCC)- SDI pioneered the first Southern Africa Youth Conference on Climate Change (SAYCCC) in the year 2010. For the first time the conference brought together over 200 young activists and climate change practitioners in SADC region. The conference was supported by COMESA, Global Climate Change Alliance (European Commission) and Government of Malawi to build capacity of youth in climate change adaptation, mitigation and advocacy.
Solar Project- SDI in partnership with Total Malawi has distributed over 4000 solar lamps in Malawi. These has contributed towards averting at least 1,480,000 Kgs of CO2 each year if the solar lamps replace kerosene lamps. This has earned SDI the SEED AWARD for 2016. The SEED Awards for Entrepreneurship in Sustainable Development is an annual awards scheme designed to find the most promising, innovative and locally-led start-up social and environmental enterprises in countries with developing and emerging economies. The awards were founded by United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), United Nations Environmental Programme (UNEP) and International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN). Biogas Project- In the year 2016, SDI introduced biogas technology amongst dairy farmers in Thyolo. The aim of this intervention is provide farmers with alternative clean energy for cooking and lighting and also ensure that farmer khola are clean. A total of 4 biogas digesters were installed. Five (5) local artisans have been trained and 8 Milk Bulking groups comprising of 1600 farmers were mobilized and oriented on Biogas technology. Environment and Climate Change Youth Guide to Action (ECCYGA) - In the financial year 2013/2014 SDI and its partner Concerned Youth Organization (CYO) developed the Environment and Climate Change Youth Guide to Action (ECCYGA). The ECCYGA is a source of information and guiding tool for youth initiatives and actions related to Climate Change in Malawi. It responds to many outcries by grassroots youth and community members that most of Climate Change information available is too technical and this hinders youth’s understanding and meaningful participation in climate change adaptation and mitigation activities. Malawi REDD+ Programme - SDI is a member of the Malawi REDD+ Expert Group and secretary of the Governance and Policy Technical Working Group, It has been actively involved in development and implementation of the programme. |
