The Youth Economic and Social Action (YESA) was a three year project (2015 - 2017) that aimed at increasing the socio-economic status of marginalized youth in Chikwawa. It was funded by IM Swedish Development Partner. The project targeted 1800 (900 male and 900 female ) youth between 16 to 30 years old, living in poor settings; not attending school; transition to work; unemployed, underemployed or inactive. YESA engaged youth in 4 Traditional Authorities ( Paramount Lundu, Makhuwira, Kasisi and Maseya).
The interventions for the project included; a)Youth Village Savings & Loan Associations b)Youth Entrepreneurship & Business Training and Development and c) Advocacy.
The project established 120 Youth VSLA groups each comprising of 15-20 youth. It adopted the Village- Agent Model which is a low cost model designed to ensure the self-replication and sustainability of VSLAs . The Youth VSLA groups were trained by the project as well as experienced Youth VSLA members, called village agents or VAs, on how to make business plans and engage in collective marketing .
The project worked with Total Malawi through the 120 established Youth VSL groups to become agents of Total Awango solar lights and phone chargers in order to access income. Solar provided quality, affordable and durable source of lighting to all the members of VSL groups and communities at large. YESA also supported VSLA groups with a Revolving Fund to upscale their business and linked youth to markets and microfinance institutions.
YESA also facilitated the establishment and support of 21 Youth Platforms/Clubs ( known as “Pabwalo” a chewa word for “meeting place”). Pabwalo clubs which provide opportunities for youth to discuss and implement actions that address challenges of Unemployment, HIV& AIDS and Disaster Risk Reduction (Floods, Droughts, Storms e.t.c.) in their communities.
